Indian Woman
Very early in Saskatchewan's history it seems apparent that the government of
the day launched a quiet war against the indigenous Indian people. Although
it was not an open declaration of war, it might as well have been. The Indians
were badly mistreated. Among other atrocities, their primary food source,
Buffalo, had been slaughtered in a deliberate attempt to eliminate the
"Indian problem" through starvation. Even today, Indians struggle for
basic equal rights. As a symbol of their inexcusably poor treatment, this
Indian queen stands as a reminder that this proud province is not without
shame.
